I was on an absolute roll when I started this blog – eating, talking, moving my mouth all over the town. I had post after post backed up ready to go (in my head). Anyway, I got sidetracked. I got sidetracked because I went to the desert and I lost my head and my heart there.
In September I spent one week adventure-tripping around central Australia with my best gal pal (who has just recently moved to Alice Springs). One week spent eating off the land (out of an Eski) sleeping on the land; up with the sun, down with the sun; off the grid, off the ciggies, off my rocker sometimes; out of range, out of my depth and, as it turned out – totally in my element!
Anyway, this trip kind of threw me out of the internet-work-ing loop, and as a result I lost a bit of the desire to blog. Thankfully, it didn’t last long – duh, I am the mouth, you cant shut me up!
I thought I’d start up again by sharing a little of my trip – not strictly sharing Melbourne town, but a girl’s gotta eat, and eat I did, in a town like Alice and her humble desert surrounds. So here are some snaps etc.
First and foremost, this is how we got around.
The trusty ol’ Suburu was our home, our pantry, our ride and our weapon against the elements. It had a CB radio also, and those nights when I lay awake in the desert, frightening the hell out of myself with thoughts of Wolf Creek, I also thought about how I had no fucking idea how to use a CB radio, so if my friend was murdered first I’d basically be screwed anyway.
I always swore it was an abomination, but while in the desert I finally gave in to Avo and Vegemite. If you are resisting, I urge you to do it. Go on, you’ll never, never know if you never, never avo – go!
We ate a lot of awesome snacks as there was a lot of trekking and many picnics, but my friend made certain that every evening we had a proper meal and Jamie came to a couple of them…

**This Jamie Oliver quinoa packet meal was amazing by the way and if you ever see it – and I have not seen it at any supermarket since, I will continue to search my whole life – please buy 2 packs and send me one. It is the bomb.
All of our treks ended with a well thought out picnic. My friend is the most resourceful cook I have ever met and our moveable feasts were always plentiful and nourishing. Below is the lunch we indulged in after traversing the rock. A super easy grated beetroot and carrot salad (made on the spot). With fresh basil leaves and baby spinach (try it, it’s *grate*).
Served with a BBQ’d Veggie burger. OMGTASTEDSOGOOD you wouldn’t even believe.
Eat a rainbow bitches. And by the way, here’s the rock. It IS as magical as it looks.
I am feeling a little guilty now as I am not actually reviewing anything here, I am just indulging in a virtual slide night. But guys, I AM reviewing something, I am reviewing holidays, and straya, and real food, and digging in the dirt, and going off the grid, and seeing the beauty in the now, and resourcefulness, and basically the opposite of everything else I’m going to talk about on this blog, so dig it…and be inspired
…and don’t get too used to it.
Next post I will (actually) review a couple of eating houses in Alice Springs, stay tuned…
